Snowballs

It’s snowing!  Okay, maybe it’s not literally snowing in the hot Christmas South, but we can make it snow with these buttery melt-in-your mouth winter white Snowballs!

These balls of white powder are shortbread-like cookies that make Christmas time, in my house, extra special.  You need a little sparkle of glittering snow on your Christmas table, making eyes wide with awe and excitement!

I’m warning you, they are messy, but so worth it!  If you make them small enough you can just pop them in your mouth without getting the powdered sugar everywhere, but that’s just hopeful thinking.  These cookies are made to make a little snow dusting.  You can keep popping them in your mouth, though, enjoying every bite of their buttery sweet texture that will just melt in your mouth.  If you don’t usually moan with an excited yumminess moan when you take a bite of something, you will when you take your first bite of these Snowballs.  I should call these Excited Moaning Snowballs because every time I make them, it seems like everyone just moans and does that ‘oh this is so good’ eye roll, especially my family members.  It’s kind of quite humorous:)
Come on over and get ready for a snowball fight as we mix and roll and get powdery white with this Christmas favorite and let Summie’s Yummies Sweet (and Snowy) Deliveries bring merriment and joy to your Christmas celebrations!:)  Merry Christmas!!!

Snowballs have been a favorite Christmas cookie in my house for as far back as I can remember.  It was the very anticipated cookie my Blessed Pie Crust Grandmother would make every Christmas and only at Christmas.  The four of us kids would always fight over them, making a powdery white mess, not to mention my parents wanting their fare share as well.  We were supposed to save them for Christmas day, so we would try to be sneaky and grab one or two without anyone noticing but there is no way to be sneaky with these…haha…you’ll have powdered sugar bread crumbs everywhere:)
Just like a lot of the other Christmas tradition recipes, I have taken over this one.  My older brother and sister both have a birthday in the beginning of December so it is a must to start making them for their birthdays getting Christmas started.  I will then make more the week of Christmas so we can have some for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!

There have been times when I roll the dough out in walnut size balls and place them on the baking sheet, getting them ready to bake when my younger brother would walk by, trying to be so sneaky and pop one in his mouth!  But I always noticed!:)  There are no eggs in the dough so they are perfectly safe to do just that.

At first, I would get so mad because I was working so hard to roll them, but then as I thought about it, I like that he likes it.  I think it brings a homeyness into the home and there is something very homey about him and Christmas and cookies baking and being able to walk by and snatch one right up!   He’s been all the way over in his own fresh powder in the Alaskan wilderness, but this year he is home!!!  So, I get to make them for him in the flesh!!!  Yay!!!  Oh how I have been waiting and longing for the day:)  It’s funny, thinking about him and Snowballs, after they’re cooked and covered in their powdery goodness, I would find him sitting on the couch with the container of these messy shortbread cookies, trying to eat them over the container so he wouldn’t get the powdered sugar everywhere.  Didn’t really work -his beard is covered in white, his fingers are covered in white and his smile is covered in ‘this is so good’ white.  It’s a baked treat that he loves and I love making for him.  Yes, I would get mad, unfortunately, because he was making a mess, but, you know, smetimes you gotta just be Present OVER Perfect and just enjoy the ones your with….to enjoy my brother!

I do want to be more like Mary and choose to enjoy those around me instead of running around with the vacuum cleaner making sure everything is neat and tidy.  That’s what having friends over is all about and what Christmas and the Holiday season is all about – enjoying life with the one’s you love and making them feel loved and wanted.  My brother knows I love him and we’d laugh, because he would try to be sneaky, but with these cookies there is no sneaking!  Just own it and be proud to eat these Christmas yummies!  Order your Yummie Snowballs here to be delivered to you or someone special.
